Description

The Atlantic Doctor Tang Fish (Acanthurus chirurgus) is a striking saltwater species admired for its bold patterns and constant activity in the aquarium. Recognized by the distinctive “scalpel” marking at the base of its tail, this tang adds both beauty and personality to any marine setup. A natural grazer, the Doctor Tang helps maintain a healthy environment by consuming algae throughout the day. Its hardy nature and captivating behavior make it an excellent choice for seasoned hobbyists seeking a vibrant addition to their reef or fish-only system.

Size & Care Requirements

Average Size: Juveniles start around 2–3 inches; adults can reach up to 12 inches in length.

Tank Size: A 125-gallon minimum is recommended to provide plenty of open swimming space.

Diet: Primarily herbivorous—feed a diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets, and high-quality herbivore preparations. Supplement occasionally with mysis or brine shrimp.

Temperament: Semi-aggressive. Generally peaceful with non-tangs, but may show territorial behavior toward other surgeonfish or similar-shaped species.

Reef Compatibility: Reef safe—won’t nip at corals, but will thrive on naturally occurring algae.

Water Parameters: 72–78°F, salinity 1.020–1.025, pH 8.1–8.4.

Additional Info

Origin: Found throughout the Western Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico.

Lifespan: 8–10 years with proper care.

Special Notes: The sharp scalpel-like spine near the tail can inflict injury—handle with caution during transfers or netting.

Best Tankmates: Works well with peaceful to moderately aggressive marine fish such as angelfish, wrasses, gobies, and clownfish. Avoid housing with other tangs unless you have an exceptionally large system.
