The Sohal Tang is a hardy and generally reef safe fish that can be challenging due to its potential size and aggressive nature. The Sohal's alluring beauty of contrasting and sometimes vermiculated stripes alternate from light to dark with most of its fins being jet black with electric blue outlining them. There is also a patch of orange post gill plate and on the peduncle where the Sohal's sharp, boney "scalpel" lies.

Description

The Sohal Tang, Acanthurus sohal, is commonly referred to as the Sohal Surgeonfish and Red Sea Clown Surgeon, and less commonly the Zebra Surgeon, Majestic Tang, Majestic Surgeon, Zebra Tang, and Arabian Tang.

Featuring a stunning light blue body with orange streaks, bright yellow pectoral fins, and dark blue horizontal lines, the Sohal Tang will be an instant influx of color and vibrancy to your tank.

Sometimes aggressive towards other species of Tangs or Wrasses, it is best to keep the Sohal in a large reef tank to curb aggression.

Size & Care Requirements

Ideal Habitat for the Sohal Tang

The Sohal Tang originates from the Red Sea and is commonly found in the warm, tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. Its natural habitat includes coral reefs, rocky formations, and lagoons, where it can graze on algae and find shelter in crevices.

Reef Compatibility and the Sohal Tang

The Sohal Tang is generally considered reef-safe. These tangs, however, are primarily herbivores and feed on various species of algae, which can include desirable coralline algae and even some soft and hard corals. Therefore, use caution in a well-established reef tank with abundant macroalgae to meet their dietary needs.

Size and Lifespan of the Sohal Tang

Sohal Tangs are known for their striking colors and can grow up to 16 inches (40 cm) in size. They can have a lifespan of 7-10 years with proper care and a suitable environment.

What Does the Sohal Tang Eat in Captivity

In captivity, the Sohal Tang's diet should primarily consist of marine algae and seaweed. High-quality marine algae sheets and pellets are ideal for providing essential nutrients. Ensure a varied diet by offering fresh or frozen foods like brine shrimp and mysis shrimp to maintain their overall health.

Additional Info

Sohal Tang Personality and Temperament

Sohal Tangs are known for their territorial and aggressive behavior, especially towards their own kind and similar-looking tangs. Introducing them to the aquarium last after other inhabitants have established territories is crucial. The presence of hiding spots and structures can help mitigate aggression.

Tank Requirements for the Sohal Tang

To ensure the well-being of your Sohal Tang, maintain a tank with a minimum size of 250 gallons (approximately 800 liters). Adequate tank size is essential to give them the space to establish territories and reduce aggression. Maintain water conditions with a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4, a salinity level of 1.020-1.025, and a stable temperature between 74-80°F (23-27°C). Strong water flow is essential to maintain water quality, and a well-functioning protein skimmer can assist in waste removal.
